October 17, 2001 Today I started the Pro-Efa capsules. I opened the bottle, and WOW, they were huge. I decided to mix
them in some juice, and when I punctured the capsule and squeezed it, it shot all over the kitchen. Ok, second capsule, I
mixed with some juice, and got in the glass this time. The oil from the capsule just sat on top of the juice, I knew there
was no way Halley would drink this. So I opened up the fridge, and started looking, I found some cups of yogurt that she likes,
and mixed the capsule in there. At the time I was on the phone with my mom, who told me I must taste it. I was hesitant, but
I tried it, it was disgusting! I had no idea how Halley was going to eat this!! I gagged a few times, while my mother laughed
at me. (I had a bad expereince with cod liver oil, and it just took me back.) When Halley got home, I gave her the
yogurt, to my surprise, she ate the whole cup of yogurt, only stopping for a second, to think about the texture. (It leaves
an oily taste in your mouth.) We were on our way! If you decide to try these, mix them with whatever you can, or however
you think will work for your child. ***To learn more about the Pro-Efa capsules, click on the link below to The Cherab
Foundation.***
This weekly log page includes entries in chronological order. I will write new entries on this page as the week goes on and
then add a new page for each new week (remembering to update my "most recent posting" link on the home page whenever
I do, of course). I might not include an entry for every day - it depends on what occurs to Halley!

Today is the beginning, a new beginning for us. Halley's speech progress has been slow, and I have decided to try the Pro-Efa
capsules, and see how Halley's speech, behavior and focus may change as a result of this. (To learn more about Pro-Efa capsules,
see the link below to The CHERAB Foundation.) As of today, her vocabulary is at about 77 words. Alot of the words are
scrambled, and the pronunciation is poor. She tries very hard, and though she "talks" all the time, we are still
striving to increase her speech skills.

Today started out pretty well. When I got her out of bed this morning, I bumped her with my elbow. I told her I was sorry,
I did not mean to bump her with my elbow. She looked at me and smiled, and then said,"my elbow", it sounded like
"my ellow", though it was a set of new words. I thought to myself, "Hmmm, is this a coincidence?", and
continued about our morning. Before I took her to school, she added some more words to her vocabulary, here they are: Daffy
(Dappy) / Eddie / Polly (pobby) / baby milk (soft a in baby and combined the two words together perfectly) / downstairs (dow-der)
/ and the words OH NO!, came out as good as if I said them myself. I am so excited to see what she will say when I picked
her up this afternoon! Afternoon: Wow! I picked her up and she just started talking, using 3 & 4 words & syllables,
something she has never done before. I thought to myself...is this real, could it be working so fast? Not sure, I am not going
to question it either. She said these words/phrases which were all new to her vocabulary: scissors (idors) / glue (boo)
/ bandaid / cup / bills / stragiht (sate) / Abby / Fruit Loops (foo oos) / Flower (owbee) / hi puppy / me two bandaid / mommy
two bandaid / help me mama / wanna see / I eat no / She also came home and wanted to show me the new signs she learned
at school, now this was odd, because she never wants to do her signs, nor does she just up and show me. She said all four
of these with the sign and the speech. (The letter of the week is P) pocket / popcorn / peach / paper. When I picked her
up from school her teacher brought her to the car, and told me I was never going to believe this, but Halley stood up in front
of the whole class and taught them her signs, she did the signs and spoke at the same time!! I wondered, but this is only
the beginning, and with Halley, I know she does have good days and bad days. On days where she is sick or tired, she hardly
attempts to talk. **Now note this....At 6:30 pm last night I gave her cold medicine that would help her sleep, I do not
know if this would effect her supplements or not, but I am doing this study on my own, and recording all details. Please check
with your pediatrician before starting any supplements.

After doing some more reading this weekend, I decided to increase her from 1 pill a day, to 1 pill twice a day. I have noticed
that she is using words she has never before, and making 2-3 words sentences that seem to be more clear. I am not sure if
this is from the Pro-Efa, or just progress. Today, I picked her up from pre-k, and saw her speech therapist, (the one she
has had since she was 2), and she asked me,"What have you done with Halley?" You see for the past two years everytime
she would come for speech, Halley would give her attitude, and refuse to cooperate. Since last week, she goes with her, and
does everything she is asked of in therapy. This is no doubt a change. I have not informed her of the Pro-Efa, I wanted to
see if she noticed a change without me telling her. It just makes me so happy.
Tuesday, October 23, 2001
Things seem to be progressing just a little faster, her words are becoming more clear, and most everything she says come in
a sentence of 2-3 words. Yesterday I forgot to mention this, this is the first time in her life she has ever done this.
She is very active, and can go until wee hours of the night/morning, with no nap. Yesterday, she crawled up on the couch and
just fell asleep. I was in the room with her at the time. The tv was on, she just passed out. Now at one point she rolled
off the couch, got back up, and fell right back asleep. This is no doubt new bahavior for her.
Wednesday, October 24, 2001
It is so hard to say, I want to be realistic, yet I want this to happen for her. I am trying to be objective as possible.
Today she had speech therapy again, and things went great. I was on the phone, and Halley sat down on the couch beside
me, and I looked over at her and she was asleep. No doubt in my mind, it has to be the Pro-Efa, calming her down a bit. She
has never just fell asleep, let alone when I was 6 inches away from her on the phone. My mom heard her talk and says that
her voice sounds clearer.
Week Two - On Pro-Efa
Thursday, October 25, 2001
Today, no new changes, seems to be holding at a steady pace. Halley can repeat words on command, though the pronunciation
may not be quite right, she does not appear frustrated.
Friday, October 26, 2001
I like to call Friday, "Friday Melt Down Day". For good reason, every Friday, all behavior goes out the door. I
am not sure if it is just from exhaustion from being in school all week, or what. Today held its name just fine. She was very
uncooperative, in fact we went to Blockbuster Friday evening, and she wanted candy, I told her no, and right in the middle
of the store (on the way out..I saw what was coming) she screamed at the top of her lungs, NOOOOOOO!!) It sounded as if someone
was hurting her. She very seldom will do this in public, let alone home. She does have meltdowns occasionally, and this was
just ugly. She did not seem to have difficulty with speech, just with behavior today. It was embarrasing, and I see children
do this, and I do not judge other parents, because, sometimes your kids are just going to do this, my husband on the other
hand, was just beyond himself. He sees children do this, and blames the parents for not controlling their children, but hey,
men do not always "get it" anyways.
Saturday/Sunday, October 27-28, 2001
Saturday- Today, everything seemed to be fine. Halley is learning her signs and using them more than she ever has. I will
be putting a list together of all of her current words and sentences, because I believe there are way more than before I started
the Pro-Efa. Tonight, we went to eat Mexican, just like every Saturday night, Halley was so excited. We get there, and she
always get a "baby quesidilla", but tonight she was complaining of a tummy ache, and would not eat, which is odd
for Halley, she eats very well. During dinner, we went to the bathroom 3 times, once she needed to go, then she thought she
had to poop, then she thought she was going to throw up, she did not, but she was just feeling bad. She had a nap earlier
in the day. On the way home, her head just kept nodding, she could not keep her eyes open, just then, 5 minutes before we
got home, she started complaining her tummy hurt, I told her we would be home in a minute, and just just whined, "no".
So we are now 2 minutes from home, and here it comes...projectile...(Ok, I will spare the details..some of them anyways) She
got sick 5 times in the car on the way home..in Daddy's truck...(snickering to myself). She seemed to feel really bad.
Sunday- She is not feeling herself today, as to be expected. She is on the lathargic side. She ate breakfast, but just
seems to be laying around today. She is talking well, and that is good. I can't get her to eat anything, so needless to
say she will not be getting the Pro-Efa today, I sure hope that this does not interfere with her progress.
Monday, October 29, 2001
Halley told me last night, she did not want to go to school today, and I decided to play it by ear. I woke up this morning
and she said her tummy still hurt, so I kept her home. She is feeling better, but still has diarhea(sp..do not have to spell
that word too much), I gave her some yogurt, with the Pro-Efa in it, and she would only eat two bites. She is still not hungry,
and she keeps telling me "yucky", for everything. If she is not better, we will be taking a trip to the doctor tomorrow.
I do not want to stop the Pro-Efa, but I can't get anything down her. Pepto Bismol was hard enough. She has been saying quite
a bit today, a little chatter box. She has been saying "Minnie" all day, (Sounds like Bibbie)(my mom's name). I
started counting and as of right now..3pm, I counted 110 words, and I am sure there are a few more, which is 45 more words
than two weeks ago. The words are much clearer. My mom said that she used to talk almost like a deaf child, almost mumbles
and now she said she sounds like a little girl.
Tuesday, October 30, 2001
Today, Halley was very grumpy. Actually just defiant. She did not want to get dressed, brush her hair, nothing. I know she
has not felt good, but this morning, she said she felt fine. She woke up at 6 am, and wanted to go to school. Maybe it was
just that she still did not feel herself. She came home from school a little better. Seemed to be a little happier, I asked
her what was wrong, and she told me nothing. YES, she told me "NOTHING". She did miss one day of the Pro-Efa, and
I hope this does not effect anything. Tomorrow is Halloween, and we are going trick or treating, she had been practicing saying,
"Trick or Treat." It sounds like treetree, but that is ok. She is going to dress up like Jasmine from Aladdin. She
is going to be in a parade tomorrow, so she is really excited. Big Day!!
Wednesday, October 31, 2001
Today, Halley woke up in a great mood, she was excited about the whole day. She got to wear her costume to school. When I
picked her up she told me she had fun at the parade. I told her we would be going trick or treating soon. She said, "NAY!!".
We went trick or treating with some friends and their children. She lagged behind, but tried to keep up, the other kids
were older than her. We went to my neighbor's house first and she said, "TRICK OR TREAT!", and I told her how well
she did, and that she had the whole idea of this trick or treating thing down, she agreed. We came across a few houses where
the people tried to make her say trick or treat, she just stared at them and shook her head no. It is frustrating, because
the general populations "assumes" that she can talk, and one lady just stood there and waited, and waited, but eventually
gave her candy. I did not say anything, because I did not want to make Halley feel uncomfortable. She was fine doing it her
way. She had a great time. It is hard to sit there and watch that, but this was Halley's night, and I know that most people
are not educated about apraxia. Halley has a great self esteem, and I want to keep it that way.
Thursday, November 1, 2001
Halley went to her "Minnie's" house today after school. (Minnie is her grandmother, my mom) When I picked her up,
she looked at me and said, "Bibbie?", and I said, "yes, you are going to Minnie's house". She was there
until about 10 pm, and she was still going when I picked her up. My mom was exhausted. Halley was good, but she does require
alot. You have to look at her to know what she says, and she is very physical, meaning, everything she does, takes physical
action to make up for the verbal. When we picked her up she said,"Wickle", and I looked and she was showing me a
whistle. Another new word for her. She finally got to bed about 11:30, and went to sleep pretty quickly. She will be tired
in the morning. I hope tomorrow is not "meltdown day".
Friday, November 2, 2001
SEE ESSAY PAGE......CALLED "I HAD A BAD DAY", this will explain the whole day, it is not worth repeating!
Saturday/Sunday November 3-4, 2001
I have to say Saturday, the behavior issues were not any better than Friday. I lost it today, and cried. I told me husband,
I just could not do it anymore, the held me and assured me I could, that I did not have a choice. He sat down with Halley
and told her that Mommy and Daddy are in charge and that she has to listen to the rules. He told her not to show her butt
anymore. (Now let's hope she understood that last sentence, 4 year olds can take things quite literally!) After the conversation
with her dad, things seem to be better. Sunday- What a huge improvement! She had a better attitude today, a couple of
times she tried to go there, but stopped herself. She is so much fun to be around when she isn't nasty like that. I have decided
to limit the sugar, she binged for 2 days on Halloween candy, and this could have contributed to the behavior issues. The
talk with Daddy helped alot. Tonight when it was time to read her a story before bedtime, I read her 4 quick little Winnie
the Pooh books, hugged and kissed her, a few minutes later when I was walking past her room, I saw that she was reading outloud,
so I asked her if she would read to me, I sat down with her, she pointed at the pictures and grunted. I told her to read the
words like Mommy does, and I told her I would help her. We then went through every single word in the book, and she repeated
every word after me, she read two whole books to me!! It was great, I was so proud of her. We will do that every night, It
is so good for her. She wants to read, and we are going to start learning.
Monday, November 5, 2001
Everything seems to be going fine, the talk with Daddy, seemed to help the behavior issues. The verbal expressions are still
going great. She read with me two stories tonight, and seems to like it.
Tuesday, November 6, 2001
Today, when she got home, she had huge splinter in her thumb. The teachers said they tried all day to get it out but could
not. I held her down, and she just went into a rage. She was kicking and screaming, she was so mad at me. I got the splinter
out, and all is well. Tonight we watched "The Road to El Dorado", and she talked the entire time. She said Spain,
and gold, and reapeated alot of the words that the characters said. During the movie, they two guys were in a rowboat, about
to get knocked over by a larger ship, said,"Holy Ship", and she repeated that, and I was unsure what her exact words
were, it was kindof funny, but then again....
Thursday, November 7, 2001
Today, Halley did not go to school, My mom and I took her to see Toy Story 2 on Ice. She was fascinated by the whole day!
We rode "MARTA" downtown, and watched the show. She was quiet during most of the show. She now does this imitation
of Buzz and him skating. Before we left this morning, we had a little "episode", she did not want to get dressed,
had a real hard time this morning. I am not sure why, if maybe because it was a change in routine, or what. It only lasted
an appropriate 15 minutes. Quiet most of the day, not real chatty, though this is how she normally acts in busy, public
places.
Starting on Monday, November 12, instead of describing our day, I will be adding a list of new words she says, and mentioning
frustrations she may have. I will be listing anything out of the ordinary with her.
This all started on October 17, 2001. We are now approaching the one month mark. I have seen great improvements in the speech
area, everyday there are more and more new words. Repeating words are not a problem for Halley. She now wants to sign, and
does not give her regular speech therapist a hard time. Every week when I see her SLP, she gives me a thumbs up, we were lucky
to see that once every six months before. The Pro-Efa has made all the difference in the world. To me, it has been the miracle
I have been waiting for.
Friday, Novemeber 9, 2001
No Friday meltdown! What else can I say, we had a good afternoon. By 6 pm, she started to get a little grumpy, I fed her,
gave her a bath, and put her to bed by 6:45 pm. I decided she needs to go to bed early on Fridays since they are so hard for
her, this seemed to work.
Saturday/Sunday November 10-11, 2001
Saturday and Sunday were great. No behavior issues, she seems to have a better control of herself. Her speech is great!
She adds new words everyday, she is repeating everything I say, now I know she can repeat me. Sunday, she was very chatty.
We actually told her to take a breath! She was speaking in full sentences, not 3 word sentences, but full sentences, and though
only a few words could be understood, she seems to be progressing at a steady level.
Monday, November 12, 2001
I remembered this morning that Halley did not get her Pro-Efa yesterday. Today, her words were very limited. She spoke on
the phone with my sister, and she was grunting, and having a very hard time talking to her. She seemed tired, I am not sure
if not taking it yesterday had any effect, but she had a hard time communicating today. When I picked her up from school,
and asked her how her day went, she just folded her arms, gave me a dirty look and said, "uh-uh". I told her if
she did not feel like telling me about her day, that was fine, I understood. I asked her if she felt like she was having a
hard time with speech today, and she said, nay. I told her it was ok, we all have bad days and not to worry about it.
Tuesday, November 13, 2001
The words were better today than yesterday, but I have to say no new words that I noticed. She sang the ABC song with me
this morning, had the tune down, but just made up the words, or letters I should say. I put her to bed at 8:10, and by 8:15
she was out. I told my hubby, he kindof looked shocked, and then asked if she was ok. We both kindof laughed, and looked at
each other. She must have been exhausted!
Wednesday, November 14, 2001
She woke up in a great mood. Chatty as can be. Most I could not understand, but she hardly took a breath. She looked at the
calender, and saw days that were marked where there was no school, and said,"Halley no school." Then I yawned and
stretched, and she said,"Mommy sleepy?" (This she said in a question form, changing the tone, some children with
apraxia have low or no tone.) Then she was playing on the phone, and kept saying,"Hello". (New word never said before)
Thursday, November 15, 2001
Here is the new word she said today, ladder, sounded like addie. Tonight she fell asleep in about 15 minutes. The temper
tantrums have all but ceased. If I ask her to do something, she will say, "nay momma" and it is done. Her speech
therapist left a message on my machine today, and she told me that Halley has been doing so well!
Friday, November 16, 2001
What a great Friday! Here are the words that Halley said today: (new) Coffee - doppee (better) Pacey - Payee
(better) Jax - Daa (new) speak - bee (new) cereal - digo This morning when we woke up, she pointed at
the cabinet where I keep the cereal, I told her to hold on I wanted to get my coffee started first, and this is what she said,"Ohh
coffee yucky, ooh poopoo coffee". It sounded more like this, "ooh doppee yucky, ooh poopoo doppee". It was
so funny, this was her first attempt at a joke verbally, outloud. We both just laughed. Then tonight she was trying to
make the dogs (all 4 of them), speak for treats. She said each one of their names, followed by speak, this is what it sounded
like: Payee bee (Pacey speak) Daa bee (Jax speak) Ahdy bee (Roxie speak) Jill bee (Jill speak)
This is now the 4th night in a row, that she has fallen asleep in under 15 minutes. Apparently, the Pro-Efa is now calming
her down some. She is now able to fall asleep fast, this is an all time first, it is extremely rare for it to ever be under
at least 1 hour before she falls asleep.
Saturday/Sunday, November 17-18, 2001
Saturday - She has just been an angel! No temper tantrums, in fact she has been on her best behavior, I made sure to tell
what a good girl she has been, and how helpful she has been. She has done everything asked of her, cleaning her room, picking
up toys, whatever I have asked. After I ask her to do something, I get a real sweet, "Nay Mama" in return. Words:
She actually sang for the first time, real words: **No doubt in my mind (I'm a believer / From Shrek) She read
a book with me last night, and on command repeated every single word.
Monday, November 19, 2001
I picked up Halley from school, and her teacher was all excited about something, and could hardly get it out. First thing
she said, was during speech therapy, Halley said,"I have to get my jacket", CLEAR AS A BELL! Both the teacher and
ST, stopped and looked at each other, and were in shock! Then she said that earlier in the day, she said,"I want to get
my blocks",clear as a bell. I spoke with her speech therapist on the phone today, and she told me how great Halley did
today, and that she smiled at her, went right with her, and repeated everything she was told to. She said, she wasn't getting
her hopes up though. Meaning that Halley must be having a good day, and she would not expect it the next time, but since she
has started Pro-Efa, she has not given her hardly any problems whatsoever, and everytime I pick her up, she says that Halley
was great. So whatever!! Other words she said today: Mini movie cool (told the dogs to speak again by name,
so this was not a random "apraxia" thing) I will be making another list of all the words she can say, and says
on a daily basis, to post to the home site page by the end of this week, I am looking forward to how many are going to be
on there!
Tuesday, November 20, 2001
Today, I had a parent/teacher conference with her teacher. She told me Halley was doing so well, and I mentioned to her my
concerns about Halley and her fine motor skills, such as coloring and writing her letters. She assured me that she was right
with the other children in her class, and has come a long way since the beginning. She showed me where Halley tried to write
her name, there were all H's on the page. She cut, colored, and pasted a circle on the page. Halley drew a picture of her
house, it was an odd shape circle with dots in the middle. She told me how impressed with Halley's puzzle skill she was. I
also ate lunch with Halley today, she seemed to play well with the other kids. It was funny, at one time after lunch, I sat
down in a small chair, and all of a sudden I look up and am surrounded by about 6-4 year olds. One was curling my hair, one
was brushing my hair, two of them were feeding me plates of play food, and two of them were talking to me. I was bombarded
by these children. Halley got a little jealous, until I got her to participate with the other children. In speech today,
once again, I got a good report!
Wednesday, November 21, 2001
Halley did not have school today. Her speech therapist came to out house, they went to her room, and at first she whined,
but that stopped after a minute or two, and when they were done, her ST told me how well she did. We talked for a minute and
she told me how the words just seemed clearer, and that she is noticing how Halley is saying more structured sentences.
Thursday, November 22, 2001
Today for Thanksgiving Dinner, we went to Grandma's house. Instead of saying her regular nay and no, she started saying, "Nay
Nay" and "No No". Not sure where this is coming from. This is the only difference I noticed today.
Friday, November 23, 2001
We had a Thanksgiving Dinner at our house today, with my family. My sis was in from out of town, and she brought my neices
who are 13 and almost 3. Halley and Zoe (almost 3), played really well together. Zoe seemed to understand everything that
Halley said. Zoe was hard to understand also. They both seem to be at the same level of speech. It was like they both had
their own language thing going on.
Saturday/Sunday November 24-25, 2001
Today, I babysat Zoe for awhile, she slept most of the time, while her parents were gone. When she woke up she wanted some
cereal, so of course Halley wanted some too. I sat them both down at the table with a bowl of Cheerios. They sat across the
table from each other. They both were yelling a word at each other, and then laughing. They both giggled non-stop. They kept
looking at each other under the table, saying some word, and then laughing. After the relatives left, Halley and I were
in the kitchen, and Halley saw her bottle of Pro-Efa, and touched it and then said, "I don't like it", clear as
a bell.
Monday, November 26, 2001
Today, I was thinking about Halley's progress in the past week, and it seems as if she has planed out a bit. I am noticing
the same words, and very few additional words. Maybe it is just me, because I see her everyday. her speech therapist told
me she did well, but she complained that she did not feel good, and that her tummy hurt. She told me that she completely understood
her. So maybe it is just me.
Tuesday, November 27, 2001
I forgot to mention, yesterday, Halley and I were watching the Grinch (movie), and during the part where the girl sings, Halley
started singing after her, if she would say Christmas, then Halley would sing Christmas. It was such a sweet soung to hear
her sing! Then tonight, I thought she was in her room, and she was actually in the hallway, my hubby and I were watching
Buffy (I know, I know, great tv eh?) and I said, Oh look Buffy is going to kick her ass, then out of nowhere, Halley appears,
and kindof giggled, then said, "Ass?", then covered her mouth, then looked at me giggled again, and said it one
more time. With apraxia, (I hope I am not alone on this), if she says a word I am thrilled, though ass is not a word I would
like to hear her say, and I told her that, I was happy to hear it. She also told me: Baby Lizard
My Fish Bites
Wednesday, November 28, 2001

Thursday, November 29, 2001
I added a few words this morning, at the total count of words are now at 173, some were existing words, and a few new ones
this morning. I have to keep my notebook with me at all times, the words are new all the time! Here are the new words
this morning: salami, tomorrow, Julie, and finger.
Friday, November 30, 2001
I picked up Halley from school today, and told her that Grandma was at our house, she sighed real big, and then said, "Spank
me, spank me, spank me" (as she spanked herself on the rear). Grandma had threatened her with a belt awhile back, and
needless to say, Grandma (not my mom) and I had a little chat. I told Halley that Grandma would not be spanking her, and if
she ever even tries to, to tell mommy, she said nay. This is a long story, but I am highly against spanking with a belt or
any object, and have made it perfectly clear to her that I do not allow this with my child. However, I was surprised that
Halley said this.
Saturday/Sunday December 1-2, 2001
I was cleaning today, and saw one of my dogs sitting on the floor all cute, and said to Roxie, You are so cute, and just then
Halley replied, "Me Mama?" I smiled at her and said yes, Halley you are cute, she said, "Nay".
Monday, December 3, 2001
Today, Halley was walking one of our dogs-Jax with some Christmas ribbon (yeah-you would have had to seen it), and she kept
saying,"come on boobie", I looked at her asked her what she was calling him, and she said boobie. I said Boobie?
She said Nay, I said Halley, Jax is not a boobie, and she laughed and said nay. I was laughing to myself, and left it at that.
Then later we were putting up Christmas lights outside, and asked her to come out of the garage, and as loud as she could
(with the neighbors outside ofcourse) she said, "bite me", I just replied,"That better have not been what I
think it was." She laughed. Hmmmmm......Are you thinking what I am thinking?
